Thanks Fred, yes good points. And I’m not sure glass is any more sustainable than plastic at least when it comes to climate change impacts (due to high energy use during production apparently).

I have plenty of plastic things I’ve been reusing for years — from bags to tupperware and more. However I am on a mission to get plastic out of my life because we’ve clearly proven ourselves incapable of managing its impacts. The main reason I am so against it is because so much has ended up in our oceans where it is causing significant harm to marine life and placing entire species at risk of extinction, and because so much is also ubiquitous in our environment in the form of microplastics, from the water we drink to the air we breathe. It is therefore also in our lungs, some of which will never be purged by our bodies (a bit like asbestos or DDT —other environmental disasters that will be with us forever).

This makes me REALLY angry, especially as it’s largely a business-as-usual approach, with the exception of a few single-use plastic bans here and there. So I am now extra careful to avoid plastic when making any new purchases (this includes everything from synthetic fibres in clothing to acrylic paint on furniture). Admittedly this is difficult but as more companies start to use bio materials I am convinced it will become easier and a plastic-free future is actually conceivable.
