It reminded me about something I read recently about phytoplankton — that apparently harvesting it for livestock feed is being considered or maybe has even started occurring (according to the founder of Sea Shepherd, I can’t remember his name). I will be writing an article on the sustainability of our food soon so I’ll mention it there, but it is really scary how threatened our oceans are, and how not only are we slow to act on fixing the problems e.g. plastic pollution, but we’re still allowing existing impacts to occur/increase (overfishing, climate change, etc). I guess we just need to keep raising awareness, especially in ways like your article does — by linking the issues to our survival.
